Where it all began
After years of watching my son, Oscar, struggle with many aspects of life, I began writing a book for him.
I wanted him to know that, no matter what, I will always be there for him and that we will figure things out together. I also hoped to encourage greater communication, compassion, and understanding between young people and their caregivers.
The book originally featured drawings created by my children and by my friend’s son, who is also autistic. Oscar drew a picture of a baby rhino and its mother, which I chose for the front cover. As I researched the meaning behind the rhino, I discovered it symbolises wisdom, strength, and protection — a powerful creature with a unique energy. It felt like the perfect representation of my vision.
During my search for an illustrator, I found the wonderful Jon Foard. As a parent of a neurodivergent child himself, he immediately understood the heart behind the story. Inspired by Oscar’s original rhino drawing, we decided the illustrated family should also be rhinos.
Oscar was involved throughout the illustration process, and together we helped bring the story to life. He is especially proud to have guided Jon in creating the final page, which later became the “I’ve Got You!” logo.
